We'd Probably Be Friends...

San Francisco, January 2012
a photo to go with the video below!

The other day I was talking to Hank about some of the things that I absolutely love/random things that make me happy, and how funny it is when I meet someone else who loves those same things- there's always that instant connection. I thought I would kick off a new month with this fun post (and also add that after writing this how clear my love for the 90s is, jeez).

So...if you like these things, we'd probably be friends, or at least have a good conversation:

If you ever learned all the moves to this dance and practiced them until they were perfect-

If you can recite any of the lines from Welcome to the Dollhouse.

If you ever had a collection of these magazines. Bonus points if you still have them!

If you have a literary tattoo. I have two- a Kurt Vonnegut quote on my back and a portrait of Sylvia Plath on my left thigh, and I love meeting other people who love books enough to do the same.

If you were ever a Girl Scout! I was a Daisy, Brownie, and a Junior for one year, and some of my most favorite memories are from GS times. I could reminisce for days about all of it. I still remember when I got my first Brownie uniform- I felt so fancy.

If you too know the words to this entire album.

If you grew up going to Great Adventure, like I did (it was located in our small town). Or on the Jersey Shore. So many things to discuss! The second I meet someone from that area I want to talk their ear off about it.

If you were on a game show, and your category was "Lyrics to 90s Music," you'd win the whole thing.

If your favorite childhood books include any of the Ramona series.

If you think Seinfeld is the funniest show of all time.

If you have a love for reality television. I'm always tweeting about the silly shows I watch, and the second I meet someone who is into the ones I love, I always have to discuss. If you were a fly on the wall and could hear the discussions my Mom, sister and I have about the Real Housewives you'd either love it or be disgusted, like Hank and my Dad (even though their faux-disgust is in amusement). "Why are you guys talking about these people like you KNOW them?!"

I could go on but I'll stop here. And I have to ask- how about you? Are we similar at all? I would also LOVE to read your list, so if you decide to do one too, be sure to share a link to yours in the comments!

  1. Oh you have a Vonnegut tattoo, that is just perfect, I love his books! I have a Pride & Prejudice tattoo on my ribs :)

  2. This list makes me smile! I was Sylvia Plath for Halloween a few years back, one person told me it was obscure and outdated but I was out of damns to give. :) I LOVE Welcome to the Dollhouse! My favorite children's series were The Box Car Children and The Babysitters Club... You remind me more of my best friend than myself, she is super smart and the funniest person I know!

  3. My husband and I STILL watch Seinfeld after all these years. And we can usually fit a quote in any situation at least once a day. Best show ever! And we live in South Jersey. :)

  6. I have "so it goes" on my torso (in a weird place, I was two sheets to the wind when I got the tattoo and just pointed randomly to a spot - naughty, I know but we were sober when we'd stopped by an hour earlier to make the appointment...). I was thiiiiiiissss close to getting "Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt" but I'm really glad I didn't. What do Vonnegut quotation do you have??

    1. YES! That's my fave. I actually have the quote you wish you are glad you don't have! Total lol-moment. It was my first tattoo, about a decade ago! I love it :)

  7. I joined my first Girl Scout troop when I was 8 years old, and am currently co-leading a Daisy troop with my best friend (whom I happened to meet through, you guessed it, Girl Scouts)!! :)

    1. Oh gosh how neat that you lead one. I think I would def. like to do something like that one day. What kind of time commitment is it?

    2. As much as you'd like for it to be!
Daisies are 5-6 years old, so they're pretty easy - meet every other week for 1 hour of teaching them the Promise and Law, coloring cards for soldiers and nursing homes, simple crafts, playing games. That's how they earn their petals (the Daisy form of badges). You'll notice that a lot of the activities are kind of like ready-made lesson plans - all you need is your leader handbook, a box of glitter, and willing participants!

  9. Oh we should totally be friends. Sometimes I think I'm still in the 90s. I was a Daisy, Brownie & Junior too! Up until the year I was sick & missed the first quarter of school. They offered to let me join late because I had been sick, but I passed & I regret it! Also, loved the Ramona books! And that dance... omg I used to be a Full House junkie. OK I still am, there I said it! ;)

    Long live the 90s!!

    1. I am all about the 90s, it's actually pretty ridiculous. So yes, we DEF. would get along very well! If only I could get all my online friends in one place for a big party...with tons of 90s music of course. ;)

  13. Oh Sylvia Plath?! I just read her book 3 days ago (I know, it's kinda late, but never late than never right?) and I loved it! Would love to see your tattoo :D
And I have a huge love for Reality TV shows, even though my mom hates it because she thinks it's stupid, but I don't care. I keep watching it over and over again ha!

  14. Ahhh!! Full House is my fave. I have an autographed photo of all the cast. Yes, seriously. I'ts on my instagram just in case you don't believe me ;)
Did you hear that DJ and Stephanie are in talks for a spin off? I am afraid. It could be good, but I always cringe with things like that. Things like that should be left alone, in my opinion. Like Boy Meets World.

    1. I did NOT hear that but that would be really weird. I watched DJ on a gymnastics show on ABC Family and it was so strange to see her as anyone other than DJ.

I also agree about the BMW thing- did that new show ever come to light?

    2. last I heard was they were shooting the pilot.
we don't have cable anyway, so I wouldn't be able to watch. I guess that's a good thing just in case it ruins the original.

  15. I'm not even ashamed of my love for Real Housewives. Even in a city like Denver, where everyone else would rather be hiking or some such outdoorsy thing. Actually... that could be a good strategy,,, if they did RHOD I'd almost qualify by default...

  16. Man, I feel like we're long lost pen pals after reading this! (Heavy emphasis on awkward pen pals from the 90's). Very close in our strange obsessions. Except mine was knowing every word to Eminem, instead of Dr. Dre (Close, right?) On my Honor, girl scout pride right here. And an unhealthy attachment to real housewives. As in, "So yesterday, Kim was wearing this crazy dress and her boobs were like popping out and... " Friend who doesn't watch the show: "Is that a friend of yours?" Me: "Uh, well, she's kind of, well, no. I mean, it's a tv show, but I feel like I know her, ya know?" ::::Silence:::::

  17. Yeah we would definitely be friends. Specifically because of the first thing you said. I never actually learned the dance moves, but I watched it enough times that if I was more of a choreographer I definitely would have done it. Also, this is a brilliant idea for a post, nice work. I might end up playing along if that's alright...

  18. Seinfeld and 90s music all the way! I decided to do this post as well if you want to check it out :) Thank you for the idea.
